Eng/SS End of Year News

Hi all,

I hope you are all well and not too frantic in the run up to the end of term! I know some of you must packing up and moving at the moment; I hope that is not too stressful!

This week the students are finishing up their TED talk projects. They are working on these in all of their core classes. I have so far been very impressed by how hard they have worked, and how knowledgable they are on their various issues.
They will continue to work on these for the rest of this week, and then present on Friday morning.
Next week will be more relaxing; we will play some games and have lots of story time as we wind down to the end of the year!
I hope to have the chance to see lots of you other the coming weeks to have a chance to say goodbye.

Week 18 News

Hi everyone,

I hope you had an enjoyable weekend.

This week in Social Studies, we are applying our study of the Materials Economy to our final interdisciplinary performance task on relationships. The students will research the impact of the Materials Economy on a biome that they have studied in science, finding problems associated with the Materials Economy as well as finding and/or developing sustainable solutions. They will write and perform a TED talk style speech over the next three weeks.

In English, students are writing their scripts for a speech about a favourite book from the semester. They will perform the speech next week in class – Beck homebase will be on Wednesday 25th May and Vergel homebase will be on Thursday 26th May. Please help your child to practise their speech at home.

This Friday, May 20th is the last day for summer book checkout from the Library. All books not checked out for summer need to be returned by this day. The Genre Wheel reading project also finishes this week so all entries into their Genre Wheel logs need to be inputted by Friday.

Important information for the coming weeks

Hi Everyone,

I hope you have enjoyed the last two long weekends.

In Social Studies, we are continuing our study of the Materials Economy and sustainability. We have focused on the relationships between extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. We are working our way toward an interdisciplinary project at the end of the year in which students write and perform a TED talk-style speech about how a specific ecosystem is impacted by the Materials Economy. In English, students are brainstorming and researching information for a persuasive speech they will write about a favourite book from Genre Wheel.

Some important information:

  1. Summer Book Checkout time will be given to students this Wednesday 5/11.

PLEASE READ THIS DOCUMENT for tips and information.

  1. Quiz this Friday 5/13 for SS. Students will demonstrate what they have learnt about the Materials Economy. We will review in class this week.
  2. Genre Wheel Persuasive Speeches will begin the week of 5/23.

Week 16

I would like to thank everyone who came to the Future Forecast Product Convention this past week. It was great to see so many of you there.

This week is the first of 3 that will be short.  This week, in particular, will only have 3 days of in class learning.  Thursday is Activity Day and Friday is the start of our 4 day weekend.  In English, the students have been asked to choose one of their favourite Genre Wheel book to use for a presentation. Over the next few weeks, students will understand why they liked the book so much, what others think about it, and then they will give a persuasive presentation to convince other Grade 6 students to read their chosen book.

Speaking of reading, students will continue to be given some time to read independently during class but we still hope that students will read for approximately 30 minutes every evening.  This past week we looked at some reading statistics and many students formed new goals for the next month of the Genre Wheel project.

In Social Studies, we will continue our study of the materials economy.  This week we will focus on production.  On Wednesday, students will participate in an interactive learning activity called the Trading Game.  It is a great way for students to understand how supply and demand works and how production fits within the materials economy.

Week 15 – Future Forecast Convention

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a good weekend.

We have a packed week this week as we officially end our 3rd quarter performance task and begin working with our 4th quarter content.  To that end, all parents are invited (see my email) to our Future Forecast convention showcase this Wednesday. Thanks to everyone who has already confirmed attendance.

Our new interdisciplinary unit is called Relationships.  This is a unit that builds learning in each core subject area throughout the quarter until the final couple of weeks where students will take their learning from each subject area and apply it to solve a real world problem.  This builds from the product designs done in the Future Forecast, but this will be in the form of a TED Talk given at the end of the year.

Speaking of TED Talks, many thanks to Nanette Medved-Po for the fantastic TED Talk she gave last week. She spoke about how it is not enough for businesses simply to be profitable, and how it is important to contribute to the world too. This really struck a chord with a lot of the children, and they were very fired up afterwards. I think the future of the world is safe in their capable hands! Thank you Nanette!

In English this week, we will introduce the next (and final) part of our Genre Wheel project.  This task is a persuasive presentation where students will use a variety of texts (including their chosen novel) to convince other Grade 6 students that their favourite Genre Wheel book is the perfect choice for a new Grade 6 student.  The skills developed and nurtured here will apply to the final performance task of the year: The TED Talk.

In Social Studies, we are going to begin our study of the materials economy.  This will begin with a viewing of the excellent video called The Story of Stuff.  Please feel free to watch this at home in order to understand what students are learning in the classroom.  By the end of the week, we will have developed a brief understanding of the whole process in the materials economy and we will spend a more focused lesson specifically on the extraction phase.

 

Week 14

Hello everyone,

This week will be a busy one with students preparing their advertisements and finalising their presentations for their Future Forecast project. They will be presenting Wednesday April 20th.  I sent an email in regard to parents coming to see their presentations.  If you would like to come see all of the hard work that they’ve been doing, please let me know.

Starting this week in English, students will be conferencing with me during lessons, tutorials and library time.  They will be comparing and contrasting two books that they have read for Genre Wheel considering the elements of fiction.

On Wednesday, we are lucky enough to have Nanette Medved-Po, founder and president of HOPE (http://www.generationhope.ph/), coming to give a version of her recent TED talk to our students. I, for one, am very excited about this!

On Thursday/Friday, students will complete a short assessment where they will answer a series of questions related to their global issue and product. I have given them time to think about their answers for this, and they all have revision guides to help them.

Week 13 – Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable spring break. I thoroughly enjoyed California and it was great to spend time with my family.

In Social Studies this week, students are brainstorming potential product designs to help solve the problems they have been researching in their “Future Forecast” task forces. Towards the end of the week, they will begin to design an advertisement (print or commercial) to “sell” their product at the upcoming product convention.

In English​,​ students will be applying what they have learned about persuasive writing in the design of their “Future Forecast” advertisement. They will also be writing introductions and conclusions for the presentation of their product.

Starting this week, students will also be meeting with me for a reading conference in which they compare and contrast two books from their genre wheel goals. Students will be signing up for a specific date and time that will take place at some point over the next 6 weeks. They need to come to this conference prepared to discuss their two books in detail.

Week 12 – Enjoy Spring Break!

Hello all,

It was great to see so many of you at the SLCs and to hear the conversations that were taking place between you and your children. I hope you enjoyed having the chance to look at their work and to chat about it.

We have a short week this week as spring break begins on Thursday.   In our interdisciplinary unit, the Future Forecast, students will be working to finish up their research early in the week.  Once the research is complete, they will be working together to truly understand the causes and effects of the global issue they chose. After that, they will start brainstorming possible solutions for their issue. Students will eventually present this project on April 20th.                                                                              
Wednesday is International Day at school, so students are encouraged to wear clothing that represents their heritage (it could be more than one country!) or their house shirts. I’m going to come in red, white and blue for the Union Jack!   

                      
Also on Wednesday, we will introduce the second part of the Genre Wheel project.  This will involve the students comparing and contrasting two books from different genres that they have read.  They will need to prepare notes in advance (compare/contrast brain frame, for example) that help them to understand the similarities and differences in the elements of fiction in the two books.  For example, they could compare/contrast a nonfiction text about medieval history to a historical fiction novel set in the same period.  Or, they could compare/contrast a fantasy and a science fiction novel.  They could also compare and contrast two novels in different genres written by the same author (Alex London for example).  Some genres do lend themselves more favorably to comparing and contrasting, so I encourage you to ask your student questions about the books they have read in order to help them make some good choices.  We are introducing this before the break so they will have a chance to get a new book and read it (or, at least, some of it) during the break.  We will be scheduling our conferences once we get back from the break for the month of April.

Week 11 – Student Led Conferences

Hi all,

I am looking forward to seeing you at our Student Led Conferences on Wednesday.  These conferences are great opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning throughout the year. They have all chosen three pieces of work from each subject that they want to share with you. I really hope to see lots of you there!

We are now into our Future Forecast project and students are busying working in teams to identify a problem, research it, and then create a product to positively solve that problem. Throughout the week, they will be researching their global issue by creating questions and determining the best places to answer them.  This might include you!

We will also have a sentence structure and dialogue quiz this week.  It will be on Thursday for Beck HB and Friday for Vergel HB.
